Abstract

The concept of khalifah in Qur'an 2:30 has been widely discussed in classical and contemporary Qur'anic exegesis and recognized as a theological foundation for Islamic educational leadership. However, previous studies have mainly emphasized normative interpretations and leadership concepts, while limited attention has been given to how Qur'anic meanings are canonized and institutionalized as living values within Islamic educational institutions. This study examines the canonization of the meaning of khalifah in Qur'an 2:30 and its manifestation in leadership practices at Insan Rahayu Integrated Islamic School, Bandung. Using a qualitative case study approach within the framework of Living Qur'an studies, data were collected through interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis and source triangulation. The findings reveal that the meaning of khalifah is collectively constructed as the identity of human beings entrusted with leadership and canonized through four interconnected processes: institutional authority, normative legitimacy, institutionalization, and continuous value reproduction. This meaning is manifested in the curriculum, school culture, student leadership programs, character development, and teachers’ exemplary practices. The novelty of this study lies in proposing a Qur'anic Meaning Canonization Model that explains how Qur'anic interpretations are transformed into institutional values shaping educational governance and leadership practices. This study contributes to Living Qur'an studies by highlighting the process of meaning formation, institutionalization, and reproduction of Qur'anic values in Islamic educational contexts.
