Abstract

Rapid digital communication has intensified misinformation and ethical challenges, highlighting the need for a Qur'anic framework of communication grounded in moral values. Previous studies predominantly examine the six qaulan expressions sadidan, ma'rufan, layyinan, kariman, balighan, and maysuran as a unified ethical concept, overlooking their distinct textual contexts and producing inconsistent interpretations, particularly in gender-related studies. This study aims to analyze the six qaulan expressions through an exegetical approach and examine their relevance to the communication experiences of career women from a gender-sensitive interpretive perspective. This qualitative library research employs thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu'i) of classical and contemporary Qur'anic commentaries, supported by a Systematic Literature Review of relevant Scopus-indexed articles published between 2020 and 2026. The findings reveal that only qaulan ma'rufan in Q.S. Al-Ahzab [33]:32 explicitly addresses women, namely the Prophet's wives, whereas the remaining five expressions represent universal ethical principles applicable regardless of gender. This distinction has largely been overlooked in previous thematic studies. The study concludes that Qur'anic communication should not be understood as a homogeneous ethical category. Instead, it proposes an integrated exegetical framework that distinguishes gender-specific from gender-neutral qaulan expressions, providing a more precise interpretive foundation for gender-sensitive studies of Qur'anic communication.
